House Takes Up Mega Infrastructure Bill

The $1 trillion Infrastructure Bill, having passed the Senate last week 69-30 in a rare display of bipartisanship, meets several roadblocks in the House. A group of moderate Democrats have demanded that Speaker Pelosi call a vote on the measure immediately, reiterating the importance of getting shovels in the ground without delay. The more liberal progressive wing of her party has threatened to hold the bill hostage until the much larger $3.5 trillion "social infrastructure" bill that encompasses all sorts of things including healthcare, education, and child care gets passed. The Speaker has signaled the possibility of a procedural maneuver that could move both measures simultaneously, but the moderates do not appear to be willing to budge.
